Originally from North Wales, Arwel was a professional actor (1989-2009), Literary Manager at Sgript Cymru (2005-8), and Associate Director at Sherman Cymru (2008-11), before becoming Artistic Director of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru (Theatr Gen) in 2011.
In 2002 he won a BAFTA Cymru (as actor) for Treflan (S4C), and DM Davies Award (writing/directing) for short film Cyn Elo’r Haul.
His directing credits for Theatr Gen include: Y Tad (Le Père), Macbeth, Chwalfa, Y Fenyw Ddaeth o’r Môr (The Lady From the Sea), Blodeuwedd, Y Bont, Sgint, Llwyth. Other directing credits include: Ceisio’i Bywyd Hi (Attempts on Her Life), Maes Terfyn, Yr Argae (The Weir) (Sherman Cymru); Noson i’w Chofio, Gwe o Gelwydd (Cwmni Inc); Mae Sera’n Wag (Sgript Cymru/Prosiect9); Hedfan Drwy’r Machlud (Sgript Cymru/RWCMD).
