SKUPOVA PLZEŇ

SKUPA’S PILSEN is the oldest professional theatre festival in the Czech Republic (or Czechoslovakia). It was held for the first time in 1967 as a ceremony of the double anniversary of Josef Skupa. Since 1970, it has become a competitive event of Czech professional puppetry, which was held annually until 1978, then changed to a biennial.

After 1990, besides statutory theatres, private groups and individuals take part in it. The main program is always accompanied by a representative foreign productions (4-5 performances). Traditionally, the puppet generation from the higher theatre schools has been given space here. The competition productions are judged by a national or international jury that awards individual prizes. In 2010, the 28th SP was conceived not only as a competition show of selected productions of Czech theatres, but also as a presentation of Czech puppet theatre to foreign guests with the aim of supporting the export of Czech puppetry to the world. Due to the development of our theatre type and the nature of the part of the productions offered, the word “alternative” was officially added to the title of the festival.

In 2015, a special Skupa’s Pilsen International was held, as Pilsen was awarded the title European City of Culture.

During the festival, there is always a rich accompanying program: workshop, street shows, concerts, seminars etc
